Most people use meta to mean the army everyone is running. That is close enough to be useful and wrong enough to cost you a war attack, because popularity and effectiveness come apart exactly when it matters: the week after a balance patch, and at the Town Hall you just upgraded into.

## Meta means the answer, not the trend

Meta is short for most effective tactic available. The word carries a claim about results, not about how many people are using it.

An army is meta when it beats bases built specifically to stop it. That is a much harder bar than winning. Almost anything three stars a base two Town Halls below it, and almost anything three stars a base whose builder was not thinking about your army. The meta army is the one that still gets there when the defender did think about it.

> **The whole idea in one sentence**
>
> Popular means a lot of people run it. Meta means it still works when the base was built to stop it. Those overlap most of the time, and the times they do not are the times you lose a war attack.

This is why the honest list is short. At any Town Hall there are usually three armies that clear that bar, not fifteen.

## What actually moves the meta

Three things, in order of how much they matter.

**A new troop.** This is the big one, and it is why the meta is tied to Town Hall levels rather than to the calendar. Throwers unlocking at TH16 did not adjust the TH16 meta, it replaced it. Throwers out range almost every defence and shoot over walls, so a pack of them never has to walk into the thing that is killing it. Nothing at TH15 plays like that.

**A defence rework or a new defence.** A new building changes which paths through a base are survivable, which quietly kills armies that depended on the old ones.

**A stat change.** Usually the smallest mover. A nerf tends to reorder the list rather than rewrite it, turning the first choice into the third.

What does not move the meta: a popular creator posting an army, a good attack in a tournament, or a video title with the word broken in it.

## The four tests

Before an army is worth learning, it has to be buildable in the first place. These sound obvious and a surprising number of army lists on the internet fail them.

1. **It fills the camps exactly.** Not close. If a TH17 army comes to 334 of 340 camp space, six space is doing nothing, and six space is a Rocket Balloon that could have taken an Air Defence.
2. **It uses all four heroes.** The game lets you deploy four. An army built around three is an army with a hero's worth of damage missing.
3. **It respects the two Super Troop limit.** You can have two Super Troops active at a time. Lists with three are lists nobody actually ran.
4. **Everything in it is unlocked at that Town Hall.** A TH16 army containing a troop that arrives at TH17 is a TH17 army with the wrong label.

Then the real test, which is the one worth caring about:

**It three stars its own Town Hall and at least one above it.**

That is the difference between an army you learn and an army you use. If it only works at your exact Town Hall, you throw the practice away the moment you upgrade, and you cannot be dropped up in war without switching to something you have never run. An army that triples one above its own is an army you keep.

## The meta is per Town Hall

There is no single Clash of Clans meta, and anyone who gives you one army for the whole game is telling you about their Town Hall, not yours.

- [TH18 armies](https://clanwarden.com/armies/th18) are built around 352 camp space and the Dragon Duke, which is what makes them TH18 armies rather than bigger TH17 ones.
- [TH17 armies](https://clanwarden.com/armies/th17) lean on the Fireball and on Royal Champion walks to open a side before the main pack commits.
- [TH16 armies](https://clanwarden.com/armies/th16) changed completely when Throwers arrived. This is where a lot of players stop rushing and start learning, because it is the first Town Hall where the strong army is strong for a structural reason rather than a numbers reason.
- [TH15 armies](https://clanwarden.com/armies/th15) are Root Riders and Super Yeti smash, and they are still the cleanest introduction to walking a hero in before the army lands.

Every army in [the library](https://clanwarden.com/armies) carries a working copy link, the full troop, spell and hero equipment list, the attack step by step, and the base shape that beats it.

## How to tell the meta has moved

You do not need to follow patch notes to notice. Three signs, all of which show up in your own attacks before anyone posts about them.

The army starts two starring bases it used to three star, against the same Town Hall, with the same heroes. One bad attack is variance. Five in a row is information.

A defence you used to ignore starts ending attacks. That usually means its stats moved or its targeting changed.

Base builders start leaving a hole your army wants to walk into. When a base looks generous, it is usually bait, and bait is built for whatever is currently common.

> **The most expensive mistake is switching too early**
>
> Relearning an army costs you a week of sloppy attacks while your muscle memory catches up. Do it because your own results moved, not because a video said the meta shifted. A worse army you can run cleanly beats a better army you are still fumbling.

## What is not meta

**The army in the video where the base was terrible.** Watch what the base was, not what the army did.

**An army that wins.** Winning is a low bar. Two stars is winning in most contexts and is not what meta armies are for.

**Your comfort army, on principle.** Comfort is worth a lot and it is not worth everything. If you have not three starred your own Town Hall with it in a month, it is not carrying you.

**Anything with a Town Hall label that does not match its contents.** Check the troop list against your own unlocks before you trust the label.

## The part nobody wants to hear

A meta army assumes an account that has kept up. Hero levels, hero equipment, and a lab that is not three tiers behind. All of them.

If your attacks are falling short and you have swapped armies twice, the army is very probably not the problem. A rushed TH17 running the best TH17 army in the game is still a rushed TH17, and the Fireball you do not have yet is the reason the core is not opening.

That is a fixable problem, but you have to fix the right thing. [Paste your player tag into the reviewer](https://clanwarden.com/) and it will tell you what is actually behind and what to upgrade first, which is a more useful answer than another army list.

## Frequently asked

### What does meta mean in Clash of Clans?

Meta is short for most effective tactic available. In Clash of Clans it means the small set of armies that reliably three star bases built specifically to stop them, at a given Town Hall, under the current balance patch. It is not the same as the most popular army, and it is not a single army for the whole game. Every Town Hall has its own meta.

### What is the current Clash of Clans meta?

At TH18 it is Hydra, Zap Throwers and a Royal Champion walk into Meteor Golems. At TH17 it is Fireball Super Yetis and Royal Champion walk armies. At TH16 the Thrower armies took over the moment Throwers unlocked, alongside Ruin Witches. At TH15 it is Root Riders and Super Yeti smash. Each of those has a copy link and a step by step on its own page in the army library.

### Does the meta change often?

It moves on balance patches and Town Hall releases, not weekly. A new troop is the biggest mover, a defence rework is second, and a stat nerf usually shifts which army is first rather than replacing the list. In practice you relearn one army every few months, not every week.

### Should I always use the meta army?

Use it as your default and keep one alternative for the base type it hates. Every meta army has a base shape that beats it, which is why the good army pages tell you what beats it as well as how to run it. Bringing the wrong meta army into the wrong base is worse than bringing a comfortable army you actually know.

### Is a meta army enough to three star if my account is rushed?

No. Meta armies assume hero levels, hero equipment and a lab that have kept up with your Town Hall. If yours have not, the army is not what is holding the attack back, and swapping armies will not fix it. Check what is actually behind before you blame the composition.

### What makes an army meta rather than just good?

Four things. It fills the camps exactly with nothing wasted, it uses all four heroes the game lets you deploy, it stays inside the two Super Troop limit, and it only contains what is unlocked at that Town Hall. On top of that it has to three star its own Town Hall and at least one above it, which is the test that separates an army worth learning from one that works this week.
