Builder Base: worth doing, for exactly one reason

What Builder Base is, why Home Village players should care, how Builder Hall 3 to 10 works, and the one unlock that makes the mode worth finishing.

7 min read

Most accounts have a Builder Base sitting at BH6 that nobody has opened in a year. That is a defensible choice right up until you realise what is parked behind it: a sixth builder in the village you actually care about, permanently, for free.

What is Builder Base in Clash of Clans?

A second village, reached by the boat on the shore of your Home Village. It has its own Builder Hall, its own gold and elixir, its own troops, its own defences and its own hero, the Battle Machine. None of it crosses over. Your Home Village army does not go there, and nothing you build there shows up at home.

That separation is why people quit it. You are being asked to level a whole second account, and the rewards land in a village that is not the one you are invested in.

Two villages, one exception

Builder Base is a separate game sharing your account. The only things that cross the water are the sixth builder and the gems from the Gem Mine. Everything else stays on that side of the shore.

Why bother at all: the sixth builder

Builders are the real currency in Clash of Clans. Not gold, not elixir, not gems. Builder-days are the constraint on everything, and going from five builders to six is a permanent twenty percent increase in how fast your account moves, for the rest of its life.

There is exactly one way to get it, and it is the O.T.T.O Hut in Builder Base.

That is the entire argument for the mode. Not the trophies, not the layouts, not the Battle Machine. A player who grinds Builder Base to BH9, collects O.T.T.O and never opens the boat again has extracted everything worth having.

How to get the 6th builder

Reach Builder Hall 9, build the O.T.T.O Hut, and complete the upgrade tasks it sets you. The hut lists them in game, and it tracks your progress against each one.

Read them in the hut rather than from any guide, this one included. Supercell has adjusted the requirements more than once, and a wrong level in a guide costs you a week of building the wrong thing. The hut is the only source that cannot be out of date.

What is worth knowing in advance is the shape of it: the tasks are specific building and troop levels, they are all things you would eventually upgrade anyway, and none of them are optional. Once they are done, O.T.T.O takes over your Builder Base and your sixth builder walks home.

Builder Hall 3 to 10, what actually changes

Builder HallWhat it is for
BH3 to BH5Learning the mode. Cheap, fast, and everything unlocks quickly enough that there is no real decision to make
BH6Where most accounts stop. The Battle Machine arrives, which is the first thing that makes attacks feel different
BH7 to BH8The grind. Nothing here is exciting and it is the stretch that makes people quit
BH9The one that matters. The O.T.T.O Hut unlocks here, and this is the level to aim at from the day you start
BH10Optional. Reached by people who enjoy the mode for its own sake, which is a real thing but not why you are here

If your goal is the sixth builder, everything from BH3 onward is a straight line to BH9 and nothing else deserves a decision.

What to upgrade in Builder Base

The Home Village order does not apply, because you are not defending anything you care about. Builder Base is an offence problem: you need to win enough attacks to keep loot coming in, and defences only matter as far as they contribute to that.

  1. 1Star Laboratory. It uses no builder, exactly like the Home Village lab, so leaving it idle is pure waste.
  2. 2Battle Machine. Your hero, and the difference between winning attacks and grinding them.
  3. 3Whatever the O.T.T.O Hut is asking for. Once the hut exists, its list is your list.
  4. 4Builder Hall, when everything else is close to capped. Same rule as at home: upgrading the hall early raises every cap at once and leaves you behind on all of them.
  5. 5Defences last, and only enough to keep your loot rate up.
The Clock Tower is the whole mode's pacing

The Clock Tower boost speeds up everything in Builder Base while it runs, and it is free. An account that uses it every time it comes off cooldown reaches BH9 dramatically faster than one that forgets it exists. Set a habit of tapping it the moment you open the boat.

Layouts, and being honest about them

Builder Base layouts are their own problem, and a good one buys you attacks won on defence, which is loot you did not have to grind. The searches for them, "builder hall 5 base", "bh7 base", "best builder hall 9 base", are enormous and almost entirely served by sites that dump a screenshot and a link with no text on the page at all.

We do not have a Builder Base section in the base library yet. It is being built, and it will work the way the Home Village one does: filed by hall, every link checked against the layout it claims to be. Until then, this guide is about the decision rather than the layouts, because a guide that pretends to have links it does not have is exactly the thing this site exists to be better than.

Should you start Builder Base now?

If you have never touched it, yes, and the reason is compounding. A sixth builder is worth more the earlier you get it, because it multiplies every upgrade you have not made yet. Someone at TH11 with five builders will finish TH11 more slowly than someone at TH11 with six, and that gap widens at every Town Hall after.

If you are already deep into the Home Village with a neglected Builder Base, it is still worth it, and it is a short project compared to what it saves. Ten minutes a day and the Clock Tower gets you to BH9 without it ever feeling like a second job.

If you want to know whether your Home Village is the actual bottleneck first, paste your tag into the reviewer. An account that is rushed at home has a bigger problem than a missing builder, and it is worth fixing that order before starting a second village.

Frequently asked

What is Builder Base in Clash of Clans?

A second village with its own Builder Hall, its own gold and elixir, its own troops and its own hero. Nothing you build there appears in your Home Village. It is a separate game that happens to share your account.

Is Builder Base worth doing?

Yes, for one reason: the O.T.T.O Hut, which gives you a sixth builder in your Home Village. A sixth builder is permanent, compounds for the rest of your account's life, and cannot be bought any other way. Everything else about the mode is optional.

How do you get the 6th builder in Clash of Clans?

Reach Builder Hall 9, build the O.T.T.O Hut, and complete the upgrade tasks it lists. The hut shows the exact requirements in game and they have been changed by updates before, so read them there rather than trusting a guide. Finishing them frees O.T.T.O to run your Builder Base and sends your sixth builder home.

What is the highest Builder Hall level?

Builder Hall 10. Most players stop long before it, because the reward that matters, the sixth builder, arrives at Builder Hall 9.

Does Builder Base progress help my Home Village?

Only through the sixth builder and the gems from the Gem Mine. Builder Base loot, troops, defences and hero levels are entirely separate and do nothing for your main village.

What should I upgrade first in Builder Base?

The Star Laboratory and the Battle Machine, then whatever the O.T.T.O Hut is asking for. Defences only matter to the extent that they win you enough attacks to keep the loot coming, which is the opposite of the Home Village priority.
