Legend League bases: what a legend layout is actually doing

Why Legend League layouts are built differently from war bases, what the numbered legend 1 and legend 2 layouts mean, and how to pick and rotate them through a Legends season.

5 min read

Legend League breaks the habit every other part of the game teaches you. There is no loot to protect, no storages worth burying, and no clan scouting your base for six hours before deciding what to bring. There are eight attacks a day from strangers, each one deciding your trophy count on percentage alone.

That changes the design completely, and it is why a war base dropped into Legends usually underperforms.

What Legends actually scores

Your defence result is the percentage the attacker fails to take. Not whether they got the Town Hall, not what they left in your storages. Percentage.

So the job of a Legends layout is narrow and specific: make the last ten to fifteen percent expensive. Not the first fifty, which they will take regardless. The tail.

War layoutLegends layout
Town HallBuried as deep as possibleCentral and well covered, but not at the cost of everything else
StoragesSpread to deny a funnelPlaced as filler, they have no value
Outer ringCan be soft, it costs littleEvery building placed to cost cleanup time
Optimised forSurviving two scouted attacksSurviving eight unscouted attacks a day
Loses toA well planned attack with time to thinkAn attacker who happens to have the right army

The practical difference: in war you build depth. In Legends you build spread and coverage. A cluster of buildings in a corner is a free ten percent, and ten percent across eight attacks is a season.

Why the corners matter more than the core

Most Legends defences are lost in cleanup, not in the core. An attacker with thirty seconds left and three buildings to find will get them if they are together and will not if they are scattered. This is the single most common thing missing from a war layout used in Legends.

What "legend 1" and "legend 2" actually mean

Nothing official. When someone shares a set of Legends layouts they usually number them: legend 1, legend 2, legend 3. It is a filename, not a ranking. Legend 2 is not stronger than legend 1, it is just the second one in the set.

This matters because the numbering gets searched for as though it means something. It does not. What decides whether a layout is worth using is the layout, and one number that actually tells you something: how long it has been circulating.

Rotation is the strategy

Legends is played by the most practised attackers in the game, and they see a lot of bases. A layout that has been shared widely for a month is one people have run into before, worked out, and will three star more often.

The rotation habit worth having:

  1. 1Save three or four Legends layouts, not one.
  2. 2Track roughly what percentage you are giving up.
  3. 3When the average climbs, or after about two weeks, swap.
  4. 4Swap again at the start of each season regardless.

None of the layouts need to be individually excellent. Being unfamiliar does more work than being marginally better designed, and rotating four decent layouts beats grinding one very good one into the ground.

Reading a Legends layout in twenty seconds

  • Are there buildings in the corners? There should be. Corner buildings are cleanup time.
  • Is anything clustered? A tight group of four collectors is a free ten percent to a single spell.
  • Do the Scattershots cover different halves? Both covering the same compartment is the most common wasted defence.
  • Is there an obvious Queen entry? In Legends there usually is, and that is acceptable. What matters is whether the Queen walk reaches the core cheaply from there.
  • Where are the seeking mines? Placed for the tank, not scattered. Two mines eaten by a Lava Hound is two wasted mines.

The part a layout cannot do

Legend League is where account quality stops being hideable. Every attacker is competent, so the gap between a maxed TH18 and one sitting three levels behind on defences shows up in your daily percentage immediately, and no layout closes it.

If you have just pushed into Legends and the defence percentages are worse than you expected, it is worth knowing whether that is the layout or the account before you spend a season blaming the wrong one.

Is it the layout or the levels?

Paste your player tag. Every defence, hero, troop and spell is scored against the cap that is correct for your Town Hall, so you can see exactly where the gap is.

Short version

Legends scores percentage, so build for the tail of the attack rather than the depth of the core. Scatter the outer ring, cover every defence with another, and stop treating storages as valuable. Numbered legend 1 and legend 2 layouts are a filename, not a ranking. And rotate: unfamiliar beats marginally better.

Frequently asked

What is a Legend League base?

A layout built for Legend League, where every defence is scored on the percentage it denies rather than on the loot it protects. Legends layouts centre the Town Hall, cover every defence with another, and give away nothing on the outer ring, because there is no loot worth protecting.

What do legend 1 and legend 2 mean?

Nothing official. They are just numbering, the way people label a set of layouts they are sharing: legend 1, legend 2, legend 3. It tells you they are variants from the same set, not that one is ranked above the other. Judge them on the layout, not the number.

Should I use a war base in Legend League?

It usually underperforms. A war layout is built to survive two attacks from a clan that has scouted you, while a Legends layout faces eight fresh attacks a day from strangers who see it for thirty seconds. Denying the last ten percent quickly matters more than depth.

How often should I change my Legend League base?

Whenever your average defence percentage climbs, and at least once a season. Legends attackers are the most practised players in the game, and a layout that has been circulating for a month is one they have already solved.
