Which hero equipment to upgrade first

Which hero equipment to upgrade first in Clash of Clans, how to spend Shiny, Glowy and Starry Ore, when an epic is worth it, and which pet to level.

7 min read

Everyone asks this question the same way and it is nearly always the wrong shape: which equipment is best. There is no best. There is only which two pieces your attack actually uses, and whether you have finished them.

Ore is the tightest resource in the modern game. It arrives from the star bonus, Clan Games, CWL medals, event challenges and the season pass, and even a player collecting all of it every month cannot level everything they own. So the real question is not which piece is strongest. It is where does the next thousand Shiny Ore go, and that has an answer.

The rule

Two pieces per hero, the two you equip, finished. Then the next hero.

That is the whole thing. Every mistake people make with equipment is a variation on breaking it: levelling a third piece "for options", putting ore into a piece because a video ranked it highly, or spreading everything evenly so that nothing crosses the line where it changes an attack.

Equipment levels are not linear in effect. A piece at a low level is a stat bump. The same piece several levels higher is the thing your army is built around. Half-levelling two pieces gets you neither, and it costs the same ore.

The whole idea in one sentence

A maxed piece you never equip is a maxed nothing. Start from the army you actually attack with, and work backwards to the gear it needs.

Which hero first

Not all heroes carry the same weight, so the ore should not be split evenly between them either.

Archer Queen first, for almost every account. She opens the funnel, she is the hero a charge is built around, and the difference between a Queen who survives the core and one who does not is usually equipment rather than level. If you only ever finish one pair, finish hers.

Grand Warden second. His job is keeping the army alive through the middle of the base, and that job is done almost entirely by what he is carrying. A Warden with the right pair changes what your army can walk into.

Barbarian King third. He is the most forgiving hero to be behind on, which is exactly why he is third and not last: cheap to catch up, and the catching up can wait.

Royal Champion, Minion Prince and Dragon Duke as they unlock, and treat them properly when they do. They arrive with an empty drawer while your older heroes have levelled gear, and it is tempting to leave them there. They still count towards what your Town Hall expects.

Common before epic, nearly always

Common equipment upgrades with Shiny and Glowy Ore. Epic equipment also needs Starry Ore, which arrives far more slowly and cannot be converted from anything else.

That difference decides the order. A common piece at a high level beats an epic piece at a low one, and it will keep beating it for months, because that is how long it takes to gather enough Starry Ore to close the gap. Levelling an epic you are not sure about is the single most expensive mistake available to you, and there is no way to move the ore back out.

So: finish the common pair first. Move to an epic when both of these are true.

  • The epic is already in your attack, not a piece you are hoping to build an army around later.
  • Your army is settled. If you are still switching between compositions every few weeks, you do not yet know which epic to commit to, and waiting costs you nothing.

The exception is real but narrow. If an epic is the reason an army works at all, and that army is the one you take to war, it stops being a luxury and becomes the pair.

Where each ore goes

Shiny Ore: spend it freely. It is the one you collect fastest and there is nothing to save it for. An account sitting on a large Shiny balance is an account that has been slower than it needed to be for weeks.

Glowy Ore: spend it deliberately. It gates the upper levels, which is where the effect actually is, so it goes into the gear you bring to war and nowhere else. This is the ore people waste by topping up a piece they equip once a month.

Starry Ore: hoard it until you are certain. One epic, chosen properly, finished. Not two epics at half.

Equipment is where hidden rush lives

Hero levels are visible on every profile, so people keep them respectable. Equipment is not. That is why plenty of accounts with perfectly reasonable hero levels are still attacking with dead slots, and why it is the section that surprises people most. Check an account and see which of the five categories you are actually furthest behind on.

Pets, which are the same problem with different currency

Pets unlock at the Pet House and upgrade with Dark Elixir, so they do not compete with equipment for ore. They compete for attention, and they lose it, because four unlock at once and levelling all four feels like progress.

It is not. One pet at a useful level does more than four pets at level one, and the rule is the same as equipment: the pet riding the hero that carries your attack, usually the Queen.

Town HallWhat unlocksWorth doing first
TH14Lassi, Electro Owl, Mighty Yak, UnicornThe Pet House itself is the whole Town Hall. Level the one your Queen or Warden actually uses
TH15Frosty, Diggy, Poison Lizard, PhoenixOnly if it goes into your main army. Otherwise keep finishing the TH14 pet you already run
TH16Spirit Fox, Angry JellySame test
TH17SneezySame test
TH18Greedy RavenSame test

A new pet unlocking is not a reason to stop levelling the one you attack with. It is a reason to check whether the new one is better for the hero you already care about, and usually the honest answer is not yet.

What this looks like on a normal account

You are TH13, you run a Queen charge, and you have ore saved because you were not sure what to do with it.

  1. 1Queen's two pieces, the two she is wearing, to the highest level your Glowy allows.
  2. 2Keep spending Shiny as it lands. Do not let it pile up.
  3. 3Warden's pair next, same discipline.
  4. 4Pet House pet for the Queen, levelled with the Dark Elixir left over after heroes.
  5. 5Starry Ore untouched, until you can name the epic and the army it belongs to.

That is a boring plan and it will move your attacks further in two months than any tier list will.

Where equipment sits against everything else

Equipment is third in the overall order, behind heroes and the lab, and ahead of defences and walls. It does not use a builder, which means it never competes with a hero upgrade, and that is why it gets skipped: nothing forces the decision. The full order and the reasoning behind it is in the upgrade order guide, and if your heroes are far enough behind that none of this feels reachable, start with what rushed actually means instead.

Frequently asked

Which hero equipment should I upgrade first in Clash of Clans?

The two pieces you actually equip on the hero you attack with most, taken to a real level rather than nudged. For most accounts that is the Archer Queen's pair, because the Queen carries the funnel and the charge. Finish those two before touching a third piece on any hero.

Should I upgrade epic equipment or common equipment first?

Common first, unless the epic is already in your attack. A common piece at a high level beats an epic piece at a low one, and Starry Ore arrives slowly enough that a wrong choice costs months. Epics are worth the wait only once you know which army you are committed to.

What do I spend Shiny, Glowy and Starry Ore on?

Shiny freely, because it arrives fastest and hoarding it achieves nothing. Glowy deliberately, at the gear you take to war, because it gates the levels that actually change an attack. Starry only into an epic you are certain about, because there is no way to move it once it is spent.

Which pet should I upgrade first?

The one riding the hero that carries your attack, which for most accounts is the Queen. A pet is the cheapest hero survivability in the game, and one pet at a useful level does more than four pets at level one.

Does hero equipment count towards a rushed account?

Yes, and it is the part nobody sees. Hero levels show on every profile so people keep them respectable, while equipment does not, which is why plenty of accounts with fine hero levels attack with dead slots. ClanWarden scores equipment as its own section for that reason.
