Does the Apprentice Warden scale with the Life Gem?
No, the auras do not stack. Where the Apprentice Warden beats the Life Gem, the exact hitpoint crossover, and both run against a TH18 Thrower army.
Short answer: no. The Apprentice Warden's aura and the Grand Warden's Life Gem do not stack, do not multiply, and do not feed each other. A unit standing inside both takes the larger of the two bonuses and ignores the smaller one entirely.
That makes the real question a different one, and it has an exact answer. Which aura is larger depends on a single number, and once you know it you can look at any army and say which of the two belongs in it.
How the two auras actually work
They look like the same effect and they are built differently, which is the whole reason this question exists.
The Life Gem is a Grand Warden equipment. At level 18 it adds 120 percent of a unit's hitpoints, capped at 1,200. The percentage only matters below 1,000 hitpoints. Above that, every unit in the aura gets a flat 1,200 and nothing more, no matter how big it is.
The Apprentice Warden is a 20 housing space Dark Elixir troop with a 7 tile aura. At level 4 his Life Aura adds 26 percent of a unit's hitpoints with no cap at all. There is no ceiling, so the bonus keeps growing with the unit.
The Life Gem is a bigger percentage with a hard cap. The Apprentice Warden is a smaller percentage with no cap. Nothing adds them together, so a unit takes whichever is larger for it.
Three more mechanics that decide arguments:
- The Life Gem does nothing for the Grand Warden himself. He gets a flat 500 hitpoints and 75 damage per second for carrying it, but the aura passes over him.
- The Apprentice Warden does not buff himself either. Two Apprentice Wardens near each other do buff one another, and a third unit standing in both auras still takes only one of them.
- Neither aura reaches a siege machine any more. Both were blocked from them in the April 2026 update, so a Log Launcher gets nothing from either one.
The crossover is 4,615 hitpoints
Set the two bonuses equal and there is only one number to find. The Life Gem's cap of 1,200 divided by the Apprentice Warden's 26 percent gives 4,615 hitpoints.
Under 4,615, the Life Gem is the stronger aura. Over it, the Apprentice Warden is. It is that clean because the Life Gem's percentage is always the bigger of the two, so the cap is the only thing that ever lets the Apprentice Warden win.
If your Life Gem is not maxed, the line moves down, because a lower cap is reached sooner.
| Life Gem level | Hitpoints added | Cap | Crossover vs a max Apprentice Warden |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 to 2 | 50% | 640 | 2,462 |
| 3 to 5 | 60% | 750 | 2,885 |
| 6 to 8 | 75% | 830 | 3,192 |
| 9 to 11 | 90% | 930 | 3,577 |
| 12 to 14 | 100% | 1,010 | 3,885 |
| 15 to 17 | 110% | 1,120 | 4,308 |
| 18 | 120% | 1,200 | 4,615 |
An Apprentice Warden below level 4 moves the line the other way. At level 1 his aura is 20 percent, which pushes the crossover against a max Life Gem out to 6,000 hitpoints, and at that point almost nothing in the game qualifies.
Supercell buffed the Life Gem on 12 January 2026, raising both the percentage and the cap. The Apprentice Warden's aura has not changed since March 2024. Guides that put the crossover around 4,000 hitpoints were right when they were written and are not right now.
Run it against a TH18 Thrower army
Take a normal Thrower army with no Lightning in it, the Healer Throwers army from the library: fourteen Throwers, five Healers, four Super Barbarians, two Super Wall Breakers, a Druid, a Wizard and two Archers, with a Super Yeti and a Super Valkyrie in the castle.
Every unit at the level a maxed TH18 account has it, and both auras at maximum.
| Unit | Hitpoints | With Life Gem 18 | With Apprentice Warden 4 | Stronger aura |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Thrower 4 | 2,800 | 4,000 | 3,528 | Life Gem, by 472 |
| Healer 11 | 2,100 | 3,300 | 2,646 | Life Gem, by 654 |
| Super Barbarian 13 | 1,450 | 2,650 | 1,827 | Life Gem, by 823 |
| Druid 6 | 1,850 | 3,050 | 2,331 | Life Gem, by 719 |
| Super Wall Breaker 14 | 575 | 1,265 | 725 | Life Gem, by 540 |
| Wizard 14 | 330 | 726 | 416 | Life Gem, by 310 |
| Archer 14 | 76 | 167 | 96 | Life Gem, by 71 |
| Super Valkyrie 12 (CC) | 4,500 | 5,700 | 5,670 | Life Gem, by 30 |
| Super Yeti 8 (CC) | 7,400 | 8,600 | 9,324 | Apprentice, by 724 |
Add up the whole camp and it is not close. Across the twenty nine units in the army camps, the Life Gem adds 30,758 hitpoints and the Apprentice Warden's aura adds 15,335. The Life Gem is worth almost exactly twice as much, in the army where people ask this question most.
One unit in the entire list crosses the line, and it is a donated Super Yeti sitting in the castle.
It is worse than the table looks
The Apprentice Warden is not free. He costs 20 housing space, which in this army is one Thrower plus four spare, or one Healer plus six. So the trade is not the same army with a weaker aura. It is a weaker aura and one fewer Thrower.
He also has 1,950 hitpoints, no aura of his own to stand in, and a follow the pack AI that has to be funnelled like a hero. In a Thrower army, where the entire plan is a line of units that never walks into anything, he is the unit most likely to wander off and die on his own.
Dropping the Life Gem for a second Grand Warden equipment and bringing an Apprentice Warden to cover the hitpoints is a real recommendation, and it is correct for some armies. In a Thrower army it costs you 472 hitpoints on every Thrower, 654 on every Healer, and a Thrower.
Where the Apprentice Warden actually wins
The same arithmetic that rules him out above rules him in elsewhere. Anything over 4,615 hitpoints takes more from his aura, and the gap widens fast.
| Unit | Hitpoints | Life Gem 18 gives | Apprentice Warden 4 gives |
|---|---|---|---|
| Meteor Golem 3 | 17,500 | 1,200 | 4,550 |
| Barbarian King 110 | 13,350 | 1,200 | 3,471 |
| Dragon Duke 25 | 10,900 | 1,200 | 2,834 |
| Super Yeti 8 | 7,400 | 1,200 | 1,924 |
| Root Rider 4 | 6,700 | 1,200 | 1,742 |
Those are base hitpoints, before hero equipment, which adds several hundred more to each of them. Both heroes in that table are far enough clear of the line that nothing about their gear changes the answer.
This is why the RC Walk Meteor Golem army carries an Apprentice Warden and the Thrower armies do not. Five Meteor Golems at 17,500 hitpoints each are the best case for an uncapped aura in the game, and the Life Gem would be leaving 3,350 hitpoints per Golem on the floor.
There is also one thing only he can do. The Life Gem never touches the Grand Warden, and the Apprentice Warden's aura does. A max aura puts 694 hitpoints on a level 85 Warden, and that is the whole argument for bringing one alongside a Warden running Fireball or Heroic Torch instead of the Life Gem.
What to actually take
Three rules, in the order you should apply them.
- 1Look at your biggest unit, not at your army's name. If the thing you are counting on to survive has under 4,615 hitpoints, the Life Gem wins and there is nothing to think about.
- 2Throwers, Hog Riders, Balloons, Miners, Healers, Witches: Life Gem. All of them sit well under the cap, and all of them are the sort of unit the cap was raised for.
- 3Meteor Golems, Root Riders, Super Yetis, Golems, the Barbarian King and the Dragon Duke: Apprentice Warden, and give the Warden a different second equipment while you are at it, because the Life Gem is doing nothing for the units that matter in that army.
The Archer Queen, Royal Champion and Minion Prince are the awkward ones. Maxed, they sit at 3,576, 4,298 and 4,510 hitpoints, all just under the line and all close enough to it that they are not the reason to pick one aura over the other. Decide on the troops and the heroes will be fine either way. The Grand Warden is the opposite case and the easiest: the Life Gem cannot buff him at all, so if he is the unit you are trying to keep alive, the Apprentice Warden is the only one of the two that does anything.
The only army that genuinely wants both is one carrying big and small units at once, and even then the two are not cooperating. They are covering different halves of the camp.
Which of the two you should be levelling first is a separate question, and it is answered the same way every ore decision is: the piece your attack actually uses, taken to a real level rather than nudged. The hero equipment order covers that, and the meta guide covers which armies are worth building the equipment around at your Town Hall.

Does the Apprentice Warden scale with the Life Gem?
No. The two auras do not stack and they do not multiply. A unit standing inside both takes the larger of the two bonuses and ignores the other, so bringing an Apprentice Warden does not make the Life Gem stronger and the Life Gem does not make the Apprentice Warden stronger. What the Apprentice Warden's aura scales with is the unit's own hitpoints, because it is a percentage with no cap.
Which aura is stronger, the Life Gem or the Apprentice Warden?
At maximum levels the Life Gem gives 120 percent of a unit's hitpoints capped at 1,200, and the Apprentice Warden gives 26 percent with no cap. That makes the crossover 4,615 hitpoints. Below it the Life Gem wins on every unit, above it the Apprentice Warden wins, and the gap grows the bigger the unit gets.
Should I bring an Apprentice Warden in a TH18 Thrower army?
No. A max Thrower has 2,800 hitpoints, a max Healer 2,100 and a max Druid 1,850, all far under the 4,615 crossover, so every unit in the pack takes the Life Gem's number and the Apprentice Warden adds nothing. He also costs 20 housing space, which is one Thrower plus change.
Does the Life Gem work on the Apprentice Warden?
Yes. The Apprentice Warden is a unit like any other, so a max Life Gem takes him from 1,950 hitpoints to 3,150. He is the one unit his own aura does not reach, which is why an Apprentice Warden sent in alone is more fragile than his housing space suggests.
Does the Apprentice Warden aura work on heroes?
Yes, on every hero including the Grand Warden, who is the one unit the Life Gem cannot touch. That is the strongest argument for the Apprentice Warden that has nothing to do with troops: a max aura puts 694 hitpoints on a level 85 Warden, and 3,471 on a level 110 Barbarian King.
Do two Apprentice Wardens stack with each other?
No. Two Apprentice Wardens close together buff each other, since neither can buff himself, but a third unit standing in both auras still takes only one of them. Bringing a second Apprentice Warden for the aura is 20 housing space spent on nothing.
