Auto upgrade in Clash of Clans, and what runs while you are offline
Upgrade timers run on Supercell's servers, so everything you started finishes with the app closed. Nothing starts a new one for you while you are away.
Two different questions get asked in the same words, and mixing them up is why the answers online are such a mess.
The first is whether the timers keep running when you close the game. They do, all of them, always. The second is whether something in the game starts upgrades for you while you are away. It does not, with one narrow exception aimed at players who quit for three months and came back.
Here is the whole thing, and then the detail.
Your village lives on Supercell's servers
Clash of Clans is not a game your phone plays. The village is server state, and the app is a window onto it. That is why the game will not start without a connection, and why it throws a sync error the moment your connection wobbles.
Everything follows from that. Your builders are not counting down in the app, they are counting down in a datacentre. Closing the app changes nothing. Uninstalling changes nothing. Flight mode, a dead battery, a lost phone: none of it touches an upgrade that is already running.
The cleanest proof is Supercell's own maintenance policy. During a maintenance break the game is unreachable for every player on earth, and their support page still states that resource collectors and building construction do not pause. If construction survives the servers being closed to everyone, your bedtime is not going to stop it.
Because timers are server side, your device clock is never consulted. Changing your phone's date and time does nothing to an upgrade, and it never has. Any guide claiming otherwise is describing a different game, or a decade-old offline one.
What actually keeps running
| What | Runs while you are offline | The catch |
|---|---|---|
| Builder upgrades | Yes | The builder goes idle the moment it finishes |
| Laboratory research | Yes | The lab sits empty until you queue the next one |
| Hero and pet upgrades | Yes | That hero is out of your attacking army the whole time |
| Resource collectors | Yes | They fill to capacity and then stop producing |
| Potions and boosts | Yes, and they expire | They burn wall clock hours, not play hours |
The trap: boosts burn while you sleep
This is where being offline genuinely costs you something, and it catches good players.
Magic Item boosts run on real time from the moment you use them. A Builder Potion is 10x builder speed for one hour. A Research Potion is 24x Laboratory speed for one hour. A Pet Potion is 24x for one hour. Use one and put the phone down for the night and roughly fifty minutes of it evaporates while you are asleep.
There is one genuinely surprising exception, and it is asymmetric. During a maintenance break, some boosts pause and some do not:
| Boost | Paused during maintenance |
|---|---|
| Power Potion | Yes |
| Hero Potion | Yes |
| Resource Boost | No |
| Builder Boost | No |
| Research Potion | No |
| Pet Potion | No |
| Super Potion | No |
A paused building comes back with a red glow and needs you to tap it and choose Resume, so a maintenance break can quietly cost you a boost you already paid for even after the servers return.
Nothing starts an upgrade for you
Here is the part the search results get wrong.
There is no upgrade queue in Clash of Clans. A builder that finishes a job at 3am does not look around for something else to do. It stands there. So does the Laboratory. So does the Pet House. They wait for you, and every hour they wait is gone.
That matters more than any timer question, because builder-days are the real constraint on an account, not gold. A week away with five idle builders is thirty five builder-days you cannot buy back at any price. The upgrades you left running finished on schedule; it is the empty days afterwards that set you back.
Several sites claim the Gold Pass includes a perk that automatically starts upgrades, sometimes with advice on configuring its preferences. There is no such perk and never has been. Supercell's Gold Pass article lists Hero Skins, Magic Items, resources and boost perks. Nothing on that list starts an upgrade for you.
The closest thing to a real auto upgrade: Helpers
The Helper Hut unlocks at Town Hall 9 and is the only system in the game that keeps improving an upgrade without you touching it.
- Lab Assistant, free at Town Hall 9, speeds up Laboratory research
- Builder's Apprentice, 500 gems at Town Hall 10, cuts time off building work and Hero upgrades
- Alchemist, Town Hall 11, converts resources into one another
- Prospector, Town Hall 10, converts Ores and comes with the Gold Pass
The Apprentice and the Assistant work one hour at a time and then rest. All Helpers share a single work day of 23 hours, which starts the moment you assign any one of them, so assigning the Apprentice at noon and the Assistant at three in the afternoon does not give the Assistant a fresh 23-hour clock.
The useful part is a checkbox. When you assign a Helper there is an option marked Keep assigned until upgrade is complete, and since a work day only ever yields one hour of help, that setting is what carries the assignment across days without you reopening the menu.
Two limits keep this honest. A Helper only shortens work that is already running, so it can never start anything. And each Helper gets one task per work day, so if the upgrade you assigned them to finishes early, that Helper's day is spent.
The auto upgrade people actually mean
Search for auto upgrade and you will find a dozen pages describing a feature that automatically upgrades your buildings, troops, spells, defences and walls after 90 days away, once per year. That description is repeated almost word for word across the whole first page of results, and it is not what Supercell documents.
The real thing is called Returning Shield and Boosts, and it works like this:
- Away 35 days or more: you get a Login Calendar on your return, which pays out Magic Items and resources across a 7-day period for logging in each day. There is a 135-day cooldown before it can appear again.
- Away 90 days or more: you also get a 48-hour Magic Shield to protect your resources, plus some village boosts.
- Two players at the same Town Hall can receive different amounts, because it scales with how long you were gone.
And then the line nobody quotes, from Supercell's own support page: the total value of what you gain is only around half of what you would have earned by regularly emptying your collectors, mines and drills.
The widely repeated once a year figure does not match Supercell's documentation, which gives the Login Calendar a 135-day cooldown. Nor is this a free rebuild of your village: Supercell frames it as partial compensation worth about half a normal collection routine, not a windfall. Treat any page promising automatic upgrades to your defences and walls with suspicion, and note that none of them cite a source.
The honest summary: taking three months off is still worse than playing. Supercell says so themselves at the bottom of that page.
What being offline really costs
Timers are the thing people worry about and the thing that is fine. Here is what is actually at risk.
Your league. Since the April 2026 update, inactivity in the ranked system demotes you after four weeks, then one further rank for every additional four weeks until you hit your Town Hall floor. Four weeks at the floor and you become unranked entirely.
Your loot. Being logged out grants no protection. A Shield only triggers when an attacker takes at least 30% of your available loot, and destroying your Town Hall alone does not earn you one. Shields gained that way last 8 hours.
Your clan seat. Nothing in the game protects an inactive member from being kicked. If you are the leader, automated rotation warns the clan at 60 days of inactivity and hands leadership to the longest-serving active Co-Leader or Elder at 90 days. It cannot happen at all if the clan has neither, and members are never promoted to leader automatically.
Two mechanics soften the damage. The Loot Cart normally holds 10% of what an attacker took, generated by the game rather than taken from the raider, and after three consecutive days without logging in it goes overloaded: it stops tracking individual raids and scales instead with your Town Hall level and the number of days you have been gone, topping out at 90 days. The Treasury gives up only 3% of what it holds, and only if your Clan Castle is completely destroyed.
Going away on purpose
If you know you are about to lose a week, the play is straightforward.
- 1Start your longest upgrades last thing before you go. Heroes first, since they are measured in weeks and cost you nothing while you are not attacking anyway.
- 2Spend your storages down. Resources committed to an upgrade cannot be looted. Resources sitting in a storage can. This is the single highest-value thing on the list.
- 3Do not use potions on the way out. They burn wall clock hours and you will not be there.
- 4Do not cancel anything to bank loot. Cancelling refunds only 50%, deliberately, precisely to stop that trick.
- 5Tell your clan. No game mechanic will do this for you, and it is the loss that actually stings.

Check an accountThe short version
Everything you started keeps running, forever, with the app closed. Nothing new ever starts on its own. The auto upgrade you read about is a modest returning-player bonus worth about half a collection cycle, not a village rebuild.
So the thing to optimise for is not the timers. It is making sure that when you walk away, every builder is already busy, and that you did not leave anything valuable sitting in a storage.
Frequently asked
Do Clash of Clans upgrades continue when the app is closed?
Yes. Every upgrade timer runs on Supercell's servers, not on your phone, so builders, the Laboratory, heroes and pets all keep counting down whether the app is open, closed, or uninstalled. Supercell confirms this even for maintenance breaks, when nobody can log in at all: resource collectors and building construction do not pause.
Does Clash of Clans have an auto upgrade feature?
Not in the sense most people mean. Nothing in the game starts an upgrade for you. The only automatic upgrading is the Returning Shield and Boosts given to players who come back after about 90 days away, and Supercell describes it as worth roughly half of what you would have earned by simply emptying your collectors during that time.
Will a builder start the next upgrade automatically when one finishes?
No. A builder that finishes at 3am stands idle until you open the game and give it a job. There is no upgrade queue in Clash of Clans, and no perk that adds one. Idle builder-days, not lost timers, are what being offline actually costs you.
What happens if you don't play Clash of Clans for 90 days?
Anything already upgrading finishes. You get a Login Calendar of daily rewards when you return if you were away 35 days or more, plus a 48-hour Magic Shield and some village boosts at 90 days. Your collectors fill and stop, your Loot Cart goes overloaded, and your ranked league drops one rank per four weeks of inactivity until you hit your Town Hall floor.
Can I speed up upgrades by changing my phone's clock?
No. Your device clock is not consulted for anything. The village lives on Supercell's servers and the app is only a window onto it, which is why the game refuses to run without a connection and shows a sync error when it loses one.
Does the Gold Pass automatically upgrade buildings for you?
No. This claim circulates widely and it is false. Supercell's Gold Pass article lists Hero Skins, Magic Items, resources and boost perks. There is no auto-upgrade perk at any price.
Do Builder Potions and Research Potions keep burning while I am offline?
Yes, and this is the most expensive mistake on this page. A Builder Potion is 10x builder speed for one hour of wall clock time and a Research Potion is 24x Laboratory speed for one hour. Drink one and close the app for the night and you have thrown most of it away.
Can my village be attacked while I am offline?
Yes. Being logged out grants no protection by itself. A Shield only triggers when an attacker takes at least 30% of your available loot, and destroying your Town Hall alone does not grant one. Resources already committed to an upgrade cannot be stolen, which is the real reason to spend down before a break.
Do I lose my village if I stop playing Clash of Clans?
The village itself is not deleted, and your buildings and levels are all still there when you come back. What you can lose is your place: clans kick inactive members, leadership rotates away from an absent leader, and the ranked system demotes you a rank for every four weeks of inactivity until you are unranked.
